Our basement waterproofing systems are designed in such a way that prevents Radon from entering the home through our basins and grates.
Our systems can also be adapted to remove radon from the home. If you are reading this and wondering to yourself, “what in the world is Radon?”, you are not alone.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radon is “a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and radioactive gas that originates from the ground.”
Where does Radon come from?
Radon is formed through a naturally occurring process of radioactive decay. Uranium found in the earth’s rock and soil decays into radon. Because it is a gas, radon can move into water or air. Radon is found in both indoor and outdoor air. When radon is found in outdoor air it is at relatively small amounts, however indoor air can/will have higher levels of radon.
Radon traveling up through the ground gets caught in crawl spaces and basements. If there is no barrier preventing this from happening the radon will continue to travel into the home. As stated before Radon is a radioactive gas, it is known to cause cancer. The Surgeon General warns that Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, causing 21,000 deaths a year.
